Energy as a foundation for more responsible fiber production

ADVANCING BIOENERGY

Manufacturing cellulose fibers requires significant amounts of energy – both process heat and electricity. Lenzing implements a range of measures to gradually increase the share of renewable and improve energy efficiency in its production processes.

Our science-based bioenergy policy combines cutting-edge technology with strategic shifts to renewable energy sources. Through our biorefinery concept and targeted investments in solar, wind, and biomass projects, we’re making measurable progress toward our 2030 goal: Reducing scope 1 and 2 absolute greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 42 percent and scope 3 absolute GHG emissions by 25 percent (baseline 2021). Reducing energy-related emissions

Continuous improvement

Continuous improvement involves the regular optimization of processes, systems and operations to enhance energy efficiency, as part of decarbonization roadmaps at Group and site level.

Low carbon fuels and renewable energy

We reduce our reliance on fossil fuels and increase the share of renewable energy in our energy mix. This includes the transition to lower-carbon fuels, the use of biomass energy, and sourcing renewable electricity for our operations, where available.

Supplier engagement

We collaborate with key chemical and pulp suppliers to reduce scope 3 emissions by sharing our expertise on renewable electricity and life cycle assessments (LCAs) and requesting supplier-specific carbon footprints.

Electrification and new technologies

To drive innovation, we invest in new technologies such as heat pumps and evaluate electrification options, including the use of renewable electricity at our production sites.

Logistics

We optimize logistics and transport systems by using break bulk transport instead of container transport, where feasible, as part of our approach to reducing GHG emissions.

Renewable energy in our operations

The energy mix in our operations includes a significant share of renewable energy sources, such as biomass, wind, solar and hydropower. In 2025, renewable sources accounted for around 71% of Lenzing’s total energy consumption.

Lenzing has implemented a range of energy-related measures at selected production sites, including the use of renewable electricity and site-specific technologies such as photovoltaic and biomass energy systems

PHOTOVOLTAIC SYSTEM

Photovoltaic plant in Upper Austria

In collaboration with our partner VERBUND, we have developed a ground-mounted photovoltaic installation on a former landfill site in Upper Austria.. Our Ofenloch” project shows how industrial sites can be reimagined to generate renewable electricity.

The system has a peak power capacity of 5,560 kWp and is expected to generate around 6,000,000 kWh of electricity annually. It is also expected to  reduce CO₂ emissions by 4,400 tons per year. Three additional rooftop photovoltaic systems commissioned in 2022 generate a further 1,508,000 kWh.


In 2025, Lenzing commissioned an additional photovoltaic (PV) plant with a capacity of 1.3-megawatt peak (MWp) at its headquarters in Lenzing (Austria), in cooperation with VERBUND. This increased the total PV capacity to 8.3 MWp. The project forms part of Lenzing’s renewable electricity measures and includes a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA).

The electricity generated is used in Lenzing’s fiber production.

BIOMASS POWER PLANT

Biomass power plant in Heiligenkreuz (Austria)

We acquired a biomass power plant for our production site in Heiligenkreuz (Austria) in 2023. This investment supports our efforts to reduce fossil fuel dependency and reflects the role of the site in the region.

Located directly at our production facility, this power plant uses local biomass sources and is integrated into our existing infrastructure. It is expected to reduce site-specific CO₂ emissions by approximately 50,000 tons annually and supports our greenhouse gas reduction measures at the site.

WIND POWER PARTNERSHIP

Wind power for fiber production

We have secured a 15-year wind power agreement with WLK energy GmbH. Starting in early 2025, this partnership is expected to provide approximately 13 megawatts of renewable wind power for our Lenzing (Austria) site, equivalent to the average annual electricity demand of around 10,000 Austrian households.

Part of a larger wind farm project in Engelhartstetten, featuring eleven turbines, our share of the total output of around 45 -megawatts is intended to support the electricity needs of the Lenzing site. This long-term commitment forms part of our renewable electricity measures and contributes to the diversification of our electricity supply.

Making every wood molecule count

Our biorefinery concept shows how wood is used efficiently in pulp production.

After extracting the materials for fiber production as well as biorefinery products and co-products, the remaining wood components are used to generate thermal energy and electricity.

This supports the operation of our biorefineries, contributes to energy self-sufficiency in pulp production and helps reduce reliance on fossil energy sources.

Cutting consumption by 26,500 GJ

Employee-driven improvements at our Lenzing (Austria) site show how operational measures can reduce energy consumption.

In viscose/modal production, improvements to ventilation systems, waste gas treatment, and steam regulation for high-vacuum systems, have achieved annual energy savings of 26,500 GJ. That’s equivalent to the yearly energy consumption of 1,470 single-family homes.
