Committed to sustainable production

Lenzing fibers are made of cellulose, the core component of all plants on earth. Our source material wood is perfectly renewable: Trees regrow. Ultimately, plants convert sunlight, water and atmospheric CO2 into cellulose, from which aesthetic and highly functional fibers are made.

Sustainable production includes ensuring compliance of the supply chain in accordance with our strict requirements as well as safe use of end products.

It starts with wood procurement for pulp production and ultimately ends with the products for the consumers.

More than 99 percent of our wood comes from sustainable forestry. It is certified or controlled according to FSC® (FSC-C041246) and / or PEFC (PEFC/06-33-92). We are also actively involved in the protection of ancient and endangered forests, because we know about the significance of healthy forests as one of the most important CO2 storage on the planet.

For us, sustainable production means providing preferably closed cycles in the pulp and fiber production for chemicals, water and energy.

Used process water is purified in efficient wastewater treatment plants. In addition, our biorefinery sites use the raw material wood in such an optimal way that we not only produce pulp for our fibers but also valuable biorefinery products and co-products. By using the energy stored in the wood, our biorefineries in Paskov (Czech Republic), Lenzing (Austria) and Indianópolis (Brazil) are to a large extent not dependent on additional energy sources and therefore nearly energy self-sufficient.

Technologies

As the innovation and technology leader in the industry, we not only improve existing processes and technologies from day to day, but we also passionately develop new, future-oriented solutions for a sustainable economy.

Biorefinery

Wood is far too valuable to be only used for extracting pulp for fibers. Decades ago, we had the idea of breaking down the wood into all its valuable components and thus achieving optimal use. This is how the concept of the biorefinery was created

Resources

Resource preservation is at the core of Lenzing’s innovation agenda and a key element in our "Better Growth" strategy. We believe in growth and prosperity that are based on renewable resources, as is the case with our fibers.

Our resources at a glance

  • Wood and dissolving pulp

Wood is a superb raw material. On the basis of innovative technologies, we derive pulp from it, amongst other things. Subsequently the pulp is used to make our biodegradable and sustainable fibers.

  • Water

Water is one of the most precious resources on our planet. For this reason the responsible use of water is also a top priority for us.

  • Energy

Quite a lot of energy is involved for pulp and fiber production. This demand is predominantly covered with renewable energy either from own generation by technologically advanced concepts or procurement from external providers. As a result, we can produce our fibers in an even more environmentally compatible manner.

  • Chemicals

At Lenzing the “chemistry” is simply right. Lenzing’s recovery systems enable us to prevent chemicals from burdening the environment. Instead, they are recovered, converted and returned to the production process as raw materials.
